Great Bowerbird male at his bower: arranging the display material and wooing a female with various display behaviour
The bower is not a nest, it is essentially a batchelor pad that the male constructs by making an avenue with twigs stuck into the ground. The front and back entrance are decorated by various objects, usually white for this species. The male will arrange these with great care.....when the female is interested he will pick up other different coloured objects and throw these across the entrance. His final trick is to unleash a bunch of lilac-coloured feathers he has in a pouch at the back of his head.....he will show these to the female. When she is in the confines of the bower he will race around the back and attempt to mount her. The female builds a conventional nest near the bower while the male goes on to attract other females.
